Training Programme on Strategic Trade Regulations and Practices for Indian Hi-Tech Industry

The global dual-use market is currently estimated to be between US$ 800 billion and US $ 1 trillion and growing at 5% annually. Participation in this market is highly lucrative but it also requires companies to be aware of and institute credible measures to demonstrate capacity for robust compliance with relevant national and international export control regulations and best practices. This is because most of the products, technologies and services employed in these specialized sectors also have military uses, necessitating strict licensing requirements for their acquisition, manufacture and trade.

A staggering array of opportunities await Indian Companies in Advanced Technology Sectors - civil nuclear and nuclear dual-use areas; chemical, pharmaceutical, bio-technology, and bio-informatics sectors; and manufacturing and trade in advanced technologies in the fields of conventional munitions, aerospace, electronics, and material sciences. For instance, with the successful passage of the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, Indian companies now can forge partnering relationships with their counterparts from advanced economies to participate in the Indian civilian nuclear market (valued at $30 billion by 2030) and also compete to supply the nuclear reactor-building programs globally.

To prepare the Indian industry for full scale participation in this growing hi-tech market, FICCI has partnered with the Center for International Trade & Security (CITS), University of Georgia, USA – one of the world’s leading institutions specializing in strategic trade regulations. FICCI and CITS, with the support of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India and the US Department of Energy, will organize a training programme on July 20-21, 2010 at Hotel Taj Presidency in Mumbai for the CEOs, CIOs, and business development and compliance managers of India’s hi-tech industry.

The upcoming programme in Mumbai will have participation of senior government officials and will be guided by experts from India and the United States who have vast international exposure in the formulation and implementation of strategic trade control regulations.

This practitioner-oriented programme will focus on the following topics:

  • Understanding global standards of strategic trade management and export control compliance
  • Developing mechanisms to safeguard dual-use technologies and prevent their diversion to unauthorized end-users or proliferators
  • Establishing robust internal compliance programs in public or private entities
  • Understanding strategic trade control requirements of India’s key trading partners (United States, Japan, China, European Union) as well as practical aspects of India’s current and proposed strategic trade control regulations.

This programme is of significant practical value to all organizations who intend to engage in high technology trade and understand the opportunities and responsibilities in the hi-tech and dual use sectors.
