Design Sector:
The National Design Policy, which envisages a "platform for creative design development, promotion & partnerships across many sectors, states and regions for integrating design with traditional and technological resources”, is a sign of putting the design sector on the priority list by Government of India.
The policy and action plan of government of India focus on encouraging and promoting design led innovation and creativity in large, medium and small enterprises. Formation of India Design Council is a sign of emphasis being given by GOI on importance of Design. FICCI is a prominent member of IDC and contributes regularly through research findings in designated groups.
It is estimated that Design consultancy & service market in India, which is currently estimated less than Rs. 1000 Cr., has the potential to grow to Rs. 50,000 cr., provided the Indian designers get adequate incentives by Government of India. These incentives will fuel another sunrise industry and enhance national competitiveness of India, which ranks poorly at 16th spot among 17 countries surveyed by Korean Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP).
FICCI’s Initiatives in Design:
FICCI’s initiative in Design started in year 2006 with the formation of Pune Design Foundation, a group of Design community in Pune, which together with FICCI organized Pune Design Festival 2006 for promoting Design. The group which initially had 15 members has grown to almost 200 members in just four years. The objective of organizing Pune Design Festival was to promote Design thinking across industries as well as get support from government by way of bringing policy level changes, which eventually will encourage industries to invest more in Design R&D. FICCI received encouraging support from prominent business and design leaders such as Dilip Chhabaria, Arun Firodia, Atul Kirloskar, Bhaskar Bhatt and a very inspiring and encouraging message from Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Azad then the President of India beside many other design leaders.
From 2006 onwards till date FICCI has remained engaged not only in promoting importance of Design Thinking among its members through various events but also recommended government to bring policy level changes. FICCI’s annual design conferences have touched many aspects of design, which includes “Innovations in Design” in year 2007, “Design Conclave 2008 – Design for Growth” in year 2008 and “Design Conclave 2009 – Business of Design Innovation and Technology” in year 2009.
